I could never have dreamt that there were such goings-on
In the world between the covers of books,
Such sandstorms and ice blasts of words…
Such staggering peace, such enormous laughter,
Such and so many blinding bright lights…
Splashing all over the pages
In a million bits and pieces
All of which were words, words, words,
And each of which were alive forever
In its own delight and glory and oddity and light.
“Notes On the Art of Poetry” by Dylan Thomas
Words can be a truly beautiful thing. The way that they dance across the page, or fly through the air all thrumming with life, is a thing of mystery and beauty rarely surpassed. The pen is truly mightier than the sword; for where the sword can only tear down and destroy, the pen can breathe new worlds into life.
But is it not also said that a picture is worth a thousand words? The eye can behold a depth and breadth of beauty in an instant that could never be captured in the words of even the most accomplished poet. Words have great power, but some things simply cannot be contained within the constraints of human language.
It seems to me that both words and pictures have power on their own, but each is limited in its own way. That’s why I’ve decided to launch a new project here on Sunrise. I’m calling it “Phoetry.” It’s a combination of the words “photography” and “poetry.” Yes, I know, that’s an incredibly stupid pun for a name. Forgive me my trespass. I simply can’t resist the opportunity to give something a clever, if ridiculous, name.
For this project, I will be posting my own photos accompanied by bits of my original poetry. The idea is to fuse these two modes of communication in a way that enables me to share feelings on a deeper, more transcendental level. They will be short and simple, taking little time to see and read. But hopefully, the meaning within them can be much larger.
The Phoetry project will be separate from my regular blog posts. Where my posts are intended to share my thoughts and ideas, the Phoetry project is an attempt to convey abstract feelings in an abstract way.
I hope you’ll follow along with me on this exciting new undertaking. As it takes less time and preparation for me to put a “phoem” together, I expect that I will likely post them more frequently than my regular posts. Check back regularly at the new Phoetry tab in the site menu for new content. I apologize for the extreme posting drought over the past couple of months; my life has been incredibly busy as my senior year of high school draws to a close and a new phase of life is beginning to glow on the horizon. I hope to post a bit more over the next weeks and months; but rest assured, I will be returning with greater regularity as soon as it is realistic for me to do so. Until then, I hope the new Phoetry will be enough to hold you over.
Thank you so much for your continued support of Sunrise! I appreciate my readers more than you can know.
All for His glory,
